Human plasma

Blood plasma is a light amber-colored liquid component of blood in which blood cells are absent, but contains proteins and other constituents of whole blood in suspension. It makes up about 55% of the body's total blood volume. It is the intravascular part of extracellular fluid.

Plasma serves four important functions in our body:

  • Helps maintain blood pressure and volume.
  • Supply critical proteins for blood clotting and immunity.
  • Carries electrolytes such as sodium and potassium to our muscles.
  • Helps to maintain a proper pH balance in the body, which supports cell function.
